FAQs about Inventions & Patents
Question: How can I find out if my invention is already patented?
Answer - Public users may perform preliminary searches of patent information in a variety of formats including on-line, microfilm, and print at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Public Search Facility located in Alexandria, VA.
Question: Are there any state government agencies that can help me in developing and marketing of my invention?
Answer - Yes. In nearly all states there are state planning and development agencies or departments of commerce and industry which seek new product and new process ideas to assist manufacturers and communities in the state.
Question: I work for a large multinational company that is interested in licensing a NIST invention. We wouldn't be interested if we could only use the licensed technology in the U.S. Can the technology granted in a license be used to manufacture outside the U.S.?
Answer - Statute and NIST policy permit products for sale or use outside the U.S. using technology licensed from NIST to be manufactured outside the U.S. However, products for sale or use in the U.S. made using technology licensed from NIST must be manufactured substantially in the U.S.
